Pela Sets 2008 Dates, Readies New LP

Brooklyn-based rock quartet Pela has just announced a 2008 headlining tour with Liam Finn opening, while teasing us with some details on that forthcoming Rise Ye Sunken Ships disc, the follow-up to this year's Anytown Graffiti LP.

"Lost to the Lonesome" is probably our favorite track, showing off the Bloc Party vibe the band has gotten a name for lately.  You can check out the clip after the jump, along with all available tour dates.

Springsteen Announces 2008 NJ Gigs

Springsteen's camp today announced the 2008 dates his hardcore Jersey-faithful have been waiting for - three Garden State gigs to close out the major Grammy-robbed Magic tour at Giants Stadium.

The Boss and his E Street Band will perform July 27-28 and 31, but tickets go on sale soon - Dec. 15 to be exact.  Considering the Springsteen has sold out 66 dates there over the course of his career, we suggest logging on early.

Doherty a No-Show for Disasterous Babyshambles Gig

As fans of famously hit-or-miss live acts like Ryan Adams or The Replacements, far be it for us to pass judgment on Babyshambles for having an off night at the Shockwaves NME awards, but this truly does sound like the worst gig ever

(Via aversion) "Front man Pete Doherty, citing illness, bailed out on the show before the band arrived. By the time the act was set to play, guitarist Mick Whitnell was also absent. That didn't stop the act's rhythm section from dragging onto the stage, however. Bassist Drew McConnell and drummer Adam Fieck yanked some random out of the crowd and limped through a couple numbers."

Yikes.  But then again, the bloke from the audience was probably more sober than Doherty would have been by sound check, had his "illness" not gotten the better of him.  Sign that fan to a deal!

Wilco Sets 2008 Tour Dates

The Grammy-nominated boys in Wilco will be heading out on the road once more, now that Jeff Tweedy is finishing up his own set of solo gigs, culminating with this weekend's Barack Obama "Change Rocks" show in Chicago.  Find one in your neck after the jump.

Yo La Tengo Announces Holiday/2008 Dates

Yo La Tengo kicks of its yearly batch of Hanukkah gigs tonight at the band's old stomping grounds of Maxwell's in Hoboken.  But if you're feeling a bit grinchy and still want to check out one of those freewheeling shows, you're in luck.  A handful of 2008 dates have just been announced.

Zeppelin to Hit Bonnaroo?

Ian Astbury may have tried to spill the beans already, but now it looks like "official" confirmation of the Led Zeppelin reunion tour is on the way.  An e-mail was sent to Bob Lefsetz, he of the The Lefsetz Letter, on Friday, and he shared this nugget with his readers:

"Zeppelin just confirmed for Bonnaroo. They can't officially announce until after the London gig so pass it on! Also Metallica is confirmed on the bill too!"

Awesome!...But Bonnaroo?  And Metallica?  We know we know, the festival has obviously been mainstreaming itself for several years now, but a gig that got its start with hippie rock like Widespread Panic and Phil Lesh feels like a strange place to get the Led out for the first time in decades.

Spoon on NPR

In today's world of instant online gratification and premature band over-hype, Spoon's long road to the top of the blogger heap is as well-deserved as it is unlikely.  The band has actually improved with virtually every album, and after the commercial failure of discs like A Series of Sneaks, the band actually found its way to the upper reaches of Billboard for Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

Point being, if you haven't given Spoon a shot yet, you're looooong overdue.  Here's a starting point:  The band recently stopped by NPR to play a few cuts from the new disc, as well as "I Summon You" off Gimme Fiction (our favorite disc in the Spoon catalog).  If that strikes your fancy, Spoon has several more winter radio shows on the way in December.  Check em' out after the jump.

The UK's Editors have announced plans for a large-scale US in the new year, to be supported by Hot Hot Heat and Louis XIV.  The trek will bring them through NYC on 1.17, in support of the band's sophomore release, An End Has a Start.

With two acclaimed releases in the tank and a new single in stores (+ one straight awful video) is the band finally poised for a Stateside breakthrough?  Check them out live and decide for yourself.  Keep reading for all upcoming dates.

New Pornographers Plan Apple Gig, Drop Holiday Single

Found this via Matador Records' always-excellent Matablog: The New Pornographers have scheduled a free in-store appearance at SoHo's Apple Store for 12/11 at 8pm.  Fans full of Christmas spirit will hope to hear the band's brand new holiday cut,  "The Spirit Of Giving," available exclusively at iTunes beginning today.

Ryan Adams Extends Tour

Two bits of Ryan Adams news today:  Mr. Sleazy Handshake himself has announced a new batch of West coast gigs that will extend his latest jaunt with The Cardinals into 2008.  In addition, the artist completed work on the "Follow the Lights" video, featuring the cast of October Road.  The show is no great shakes, but Ryan has no qualms about lending his tunes to teen dramas, and it's good to see Donna from That 70's Show getting work.

Read on for full tour dates and a video clip.

Illness Forces E Street Hiatus for Federici

SS would like to take a moment to wish founding E-Street band member Danny Federici a speedy recovery.  The accomplished keyboard has taken a leave of absence from Springsteen's Magic tour, to undergo treatment for melanoma.

Charles Giordano, who played with Springsteen last year on the Seeger Sessions Tour, will fill in for Federici, but I think we can agree that none shall replace him.  Keep reading to watch a recent, Federici-heavy classic.  Come back soon Danny!

Rilo Kiley - "The Moneymaker" live at the Woodies

Rilo Kiley might have lost a few cool points with the indie kids after the Fleetwood Mac-ish Under the Blacklight, but we still love em' for two tracks: The shoegazing "Dreamworld" (10x better live, by the way) and the sleezy funk of "The Moneymaker."  Check out a acoustic take on the latter from the 4th annual Woodies, where the band joined Lupe Fiasco as last-minute replacements for trainwreck-in-waiting Amy Winehouse.

Zeppelin Prepping New Tunes?

Though rumors of a full-out reunion tour have already been squelched (for now), it appears that the Zeppelin fans who managed to score tickets to the legendary act's one-off gig at the 02 Arena might actually hear some new stuff (via MTV): Page told a Canadian newspaper he’d be: “really surprised if there wasn't (new material). We're musicians - as we're playing we'll probably be coming up with all manner of things.”

Springsteen Takes Stage with Arcade Fire in Ontario!

Oh. My. God.  Yes, I know we promised to lay off the Springsteen posts for a while, but once you guys check out the set list from last night in Ontario, you will understand.  Before we keel over in a mix of wild-eyed jealousy and fanboy glee, here's the short version:  Bruce + Arcade Fire = The greatest rendition of "Keep the Car Running" EVER!

via Backstreets:

Four more tour premieres tonight, including "Tougher Than the Rest" (an audible, in the "Heartbreak"/"Brilliant" slot on the setlist) and "Backstreets." But when the spot-on debut of "Backstreets" isn't the big story of the night, you know something unusual happened. Yep, in the six-song encore, Bruce and the E Streeters were joined by members of Arcade Fire, husband-and-wife band co-founders Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. First up was "State Trooper," a song Arcade Fire has been known to cover, and which the E Street Band hasn't played live since the Born in the U.S.A. tour. After that, they all went into "Keep the Car Running," a hard-hitting track from Arcade Fire's magnificent Neon Bible.

Springsteen Kicks off First of Two Nights at Continental Airlines Arena

Tonight SS is crossing its fingers for clear skies as the first of two Springsteen gigs at Continental Airlines kicks off at 8pm.  Despite some minor legal woes, Bruce and the gang are riding high with their latest disc, Magic, almost assured of the #1 spot on Billboard next week, after already conquering the U.K. for a seventh time.

Springsteen-mania also overtook VH1 Classic today, with an entire day's programming devoted to The Boss, culminating in a live broadcast of the first two songs from tonight's gig.  Look closely at hardcore fans on the arena floor and you might just see the SS crew.  Expect a full report later this week...

Steve Earle Serenades NYC at Town Hall

Steve Earle, who will hit up Town Hall tonight in NYC, could easily be (and often is) categorized for newbies as a something of a countrified Paul Westerberg.  What with his critical love, struggles with substance abuse and perennial “shoulda’ been huge” status, its a fair enough argument, and surely they (we can probably toss Ryan Adams into the mix as well) share a lot of fans.  But where Westerberg’s stock in trade has typically been matters close to the heart, Earle tackles political issues that give him a much more controversial edge.   Rejecting the “lovable fuckup” tag bestowed, justifiably or not, on Saint Paul, Earle doesn’t want to be lovable, couldn’t give a crap (at least in recent years) about the girl that got away and spends little time crying in his beer.  Infamous tunes like “John Walker’s Blues” or politically-charged albums like The Revolution Starts...Now indicate that he’s got bigger fish to fry.

Despite this reputation, most of the press around Steve Earle’s latest disc, Washington Square Serenade (above left), has been concerned with production rather than lyrical content.  Not unlike John Mellencamp’s Mr. Happy Go Lucky, the disc adds beat-driven, almost hip hop elements to the folk-heavy Earle sound.  And although this time out Earle is less concerned with the state of the world (despite occasional detours like “Red is the Color” and “Steve’s Hammer”), NYC natives will be want to listen close for this newly transplanted New York resident’s ruminations on life in the Big Apple

Check out two tracks streaming on his MySpace, “City of Immigrants” and “Satellite Radio” for a quick taste.

Kaiser Chiefs Cancel US Tour

Perhaps picking up on the general stateside indifference to his band's recent sophomore LP, Kaiser Chiefs drummer Nick Hodgson had the following to say about the now canceled US tour:

L_6a55100d7026071209dbaa2ed569af30

"We'd like to apologise to fans in America and Canada, especially those who have already bought tickets, but something had to give. We've been extremely busy all year and had no time to focus on the future, we plan to have new material out as soon as possible and we've wanted to record all summer.

"This needs to happen before our European & UK shows at the end of the year so we can play a few of our new songs live, we're keen to explore new ground, beyond the sound of our first two records, so we're headed back into the studio to begin that process."

The band will still play the following dates:

-Austin City Limits Festival, Austin (September 14)
-Mexico City Vive Cuervo Salón (16)
-New York City Beacon Theatre (29)

Editors Kick Off North American Tour

Gloomy post-punk three-piece Editors (below, photo by Jill Furmanowsky) kicked off its North American tour today in support of An End Has a Start, the band's sophomore LP.  Though we weren't initially enamored with debut disc The Back Room or the sonically similar follow-up, both have quietly grown on us and surpassed a great many of their contemporaries in the Brit rock pecking order.

Editors1

We'd still prefer to see some growth next time around, but there's no denying the appeal of the band's brooding but muscular riffs and the oddly compelling vocals of lead singer Tom Smith.  Editors' sound has been accused of being derivative at times, but once Coldplay wears out its welcome, it makes for a louder, edgier and all together better alternative.  (But don't forget, it's still pop.)

The below video for "An End Has a Start" is mind-blowingly awful, but a stunning acoustic take on "Bones" over at Spinner more than makes up for it.

Editors will hit NYC this Friday for a gig at Webster Hall.  See below for a full list of dates.

Thursday, Sept. 6th – Paradise Rock Club – Boston, MA

Jimmy Buffett "Secret Show" in Long Island

Since it appears that we've gone straight from the dog days of August to mid-October, those of you keeping your fingers crossed for a return to Indian Summer might want to trek out to Long Island tomorrow night for Jimmy Buffett's "secret show" at The Stephen Talkhouse

The news was leaked via Gawker and, predictably, was subsequently thrashed by a gang of angry NYC hipsters that wouldn't be caught dead in flip flops outside of a public shower.  If ya'll are interested in hearing Buffett's pre-country but post-cheesy output (OK - it's still a little cheesy), pick up Far Side of the World.  "Savannah Fare You Well" and "Tonight I Just Need My Guitar" make for perfect 3am beach party tunes and should be required strumming for "the dude on the couch" at your shore house who isn't paying any rent.

Kanye West Recruits PBJ for Swedish Gig

Kanye West's recent foray in indie rock territory might have won him some additional crossover appeal, but it did little to endeared him to the folks at Pitchfork.  If Clipse had sampled "Young Folks," it might have been a different story, but nevertheless, some bad reviews haven't stopped the rap hip hop mogul from continuing the mashup.

Kanye has asked Swedish duo Pete Bjorn and John to accompany him as his backup band for their homeland's Way out West Festival on August 11.  No word on whether they will take him up on the offer, but they certainly aren't hard up for gigs:

GNR Semi-Reunion in Hollywood, Axl a No-Show

That full-fledged GNR reunion moved one step closer to fruition on Saturday as three original members took to the stage for Axl-free renditions of "Mr. Brownstone" and "Paradise City."  Izzy Stradlin and bassist Duff McKagan joined Steven Adler and his new band to commemorate Appetite for Destruction's 20th anniversary.

After Chinese Democracy finally drops, then tanks, how long do you think it'll take for Axl to bury the hatchet for that mega-million kiss-and-make-up tour?  Might we even see a Billy Corgan-esque announcement on release day?

Bruce Plots Fall Tour with E Street?

As lifelong worshipers at the alter of Springsteen, we know better than to get too excited until the deal is done, but it looks like your garden-variety tour rumors and new album speculations are turning into bona fide news.

Rock and Roll Daily cites two sources claiming that Springsteen is lining up fall stadium gigs for him and the E Street Band.  That, in addition to persistent chatter about recording dates in Atlanta (production site for The Rising and Devils and Dust) has our Jersey Boy roots all a flutter.

Bruuuuuuuuce!

The Decemberists Go Orchestral

If you haven't heard yet, The Decemberists will make its orchestral debut with a five-city outdoor summer tour featuring the band performing with full symphony orchestras in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Chicago. (No NYC!  Boo!) These pairings feature brand-new orchestral arrangements of the band's songs composed by Sean O’Loughlin.

So SS has never been super into the whole "rock band going symphonic" scene - it always smacked of such pretense (even if Metallica did kick ass when they did it).  But this could actually be worth seeing, as quite a few of the already majestic-sounding tunes might sound amazing with an orchestra behind them.  ("The Island..." is already Floyd-eqsue.)

Decemberists 2007 Orchestral Tour
7.7 -  Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Bowl (with Los Angeles Philharmonic) *
7.13 - Atlanta, GA - Chastain Park (with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra) $
7.14 - Columbia, MD - Merriweather Post Pavilion (with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) #
7.15 - Philadelphia, PA - Mann Center (with the Mann Festival Orchestra) #
7.18 - Chicago, IL - Grant Park Music Festival at Pritzker Pavilion (with Grant Park Orchestra) Free!

Also confirmed (non-orchestral, alas)
6.17 - Manchester, TN – Bonnaroo Music Festival
7.16 - New York City, NY - Central Park Summerstage (Grizzly Bear, Land of Talk open ) @
7.22 - Portland, OR - Edgefield Winery (Menomena opens) *

Ryan Adams to Play Stonehenge

In case we haven't made this point clear enough over the last couple years, we'll say it again: "Ryan Adams is the man."  Haters be damned, so lets skip all the BS (Adams bashing is sooo 2003 anyway) and think about just how cool it would be to play Stonehenge.  Yes, the Stonehenge.  Sure, it's a little Spinal Tapish, but do you think a guy who writes his own website theme song really takes himself all that seriously?

The gig is set for June 5 as part of the Salisbury International Art Festival and will serve as a kickoff for Adam's ninth LP, Easy Tiger, due in store the same day.

Tickets are available by "special arrangement only," so we're not expecting any blogger press passes in the mail.
