Last week saw several high-profile releases and despite the obvious entry of Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds at the top spot (684,000), there were a few other interesting results:
John Mayer's latest disc, Continuum, bowed at #2 with 300,000 units. Though this marks a slight dip from 2003's Heavier Things, which debuted at #1 with 317,000, these still must be encouraging results for an album almost completely devoid of pop music or radio-friendly singles. Is it possible that all the teeny boppers still went out and bought it, (which would likely predict a big drop in second week sales after the bad buzz hits the high schools), or is Mayer actually finding a new audience to appreciate his more muted, bluesy styles? Time will tell.
Bob Dylan's Modern Times continues to hold up better than expected, slipping 3-5 in its 3rd week on the charts. The disc only registered a 27% dip in sales, and if this keeps up, ole' Bob might have a platinum album on his hands.
The Mars Volta's Amptechture bowed at #9 with 59,000 copies. It's a drop off from 2005's Frances the Mule, which moved 123,000 in its opening week, but for a band offering music as generally inaccessible to a pop audience as they, we're still impressed.
Brooklyn's own TV on the Radio made its chart debut, with Return to Cookie Mountain moving 21,000 copies at #41.
Finally, two former chart mainstays made surprising returns to the top 10: Bob Seger returned to the top 5 for the first time in 20 years with Face the Promise (#4, 151,000 copies), while Lionel Richie overcame the same two decade absence with a #6 bow for Coming Home (75,000).
So we repeat: In SEPTEMBER 2006, the Billboard top 10 saw, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan and Lionel Ritchie! No disrespect to Dylan's amazing new disc, but still makes it quite clear that our parents haven't figured out the whole mp3 thing yet...
