SONIC SLANG - ABOUT US
Sonic Slang emerged from a desire to combine three facets of contemporary journalism into a singular voice. Equal parts music news and review site, cultural blog, and literary journal, we strive to bring something new, and hopefully more substantial to the table than the typical "webzine". The proliferation of alternative, independent news sources across the web has ushered in a new age of information, communication, and journalism. Now it's time to raise the bar. That being said, first and foremost we are all about the music. Admittedly, Sonic Slang writers (and readers we'll wager) might often be found spending an evening poring over collections of 7" imports, or trolling through used record stores in search of deleted B-sides. Ok. So we've got issues. But that doesn't mean we can't crawl out from our cozy confines of musical minutiae from time to time, and take stock of the world around us. Besides our comprehensive music coverage of both established stars and emerging artists, Sonic Slang features a diverse range of columns covering all sorts of political, social, and cultural issues of the day. In addition, we have mp3s, comic strips from some of the best artists on the web, weekly fiction from up-and-coming writers, and even contests to win cool stuff like concert tickets or free CDs. We are all these things, and hope to be much more. But a few things we ARE NOT: We ARE NOT one of those cooler-than-thou hipster websites. We don't mock the mainstream and exalt the indie and obscure...all the time. (Proving this point without naming names, one current staffer did in fact purchase the most recent Third Eye Blind album...so there!) Many of us may listen to artists not likely found guest-hosting TRL or endorsing Pepsi, but if it's good, we dig it. We are also NOT one of those liberal-bent, left wing blogs that are popping up all over the place. These days it seems that most "indie" webzines run by a bunch of 20-somethings (as most of us are, or at least pretend we still are) tend to be associated with such one-sided fare. As you'll no doubt deduce from our columns, some of us are Republican, some are Democrat, and I think a few might have even voted for Nader, God bless 'em. But we can all still live in harmony during an episode of VH1's I Love the 80's. Perhaps there's a lesson there somewhere... Well, thanks for reading and don't be a stranger. To borrow a line from the immortal Paul Westerberg, Sonic Slang may be "a leap of faith, or a jump of stupid", but we're havin' a good time. Hope you do too. Enjoy. Jeff Cambron 11-02-04 |
